In 1977 Yamaha extended their stake in the 250 market. With the RD two-strokes they were undisputed leaders in the sporting sector; now they went out to attract commuters with a four-stroke.
Introduced outside Japan in the decidedly un-commuter-like setting of Marrakesh, the XS250 had little of the style of the RD but a certain flamboyance, mainly in the welter of go-faster stripes on tank and side panels.

A six-speeder, the XS was capable of about 82mph in both top and fifth gears and handled well. It suffered, and does so still, by being easily confused with the
Kawasaki 250; neither has ever managed to challenge the four-stroke Honda's place at the head of the 250 league.
