Designed for the Japanese market where users generally avoid
models with a large chassis and high seat height, this lightweight, compact
trail model debuted in 1997. It had a 2-stroke 224cc single-cylinder engine
fitted with a traction control system, a newly designed frame, front and rear
suspensions providing a good combination of cushioning performance and ease of
leg reach to the ground, a multi-function digital instrument panel and more. It
was packed full of performance and functions to heighten the joy of riding and
operating the machine. The DT230 is the 1998 version that was equipped with an
aluminum swingarm and the Yamaha Computerized Lubrication System (YCLS) that
controlled the amount of lubrication oil used by the engine.
