Triumph Bonneville T40 / Black
From a press release by Triumph: Triumph Motorcycles introduces the new Bonneville T40 and T40 Black, extending the appeal of the iconic Bonneville to more riders than ever before. Powered by a new iteration of the 400cc TR Series engine, the new models combine timeless design and beautiful craftsmanship with contemporary capability, delivering an authentic Bonneville riding experience.
The latest additions to Triumph's Bonneville and 400cc line-ups, the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black capture the timeless appeal and unmistakable character that have defined the Bonneville for generations. Both models embody the spirit of 1960s cool through their authentic proportions, beautiful finish and enduring style. Signature Bonneville design cues include the sculpted teardrop fuel tank, classic round headlight, traditional engine profile, spoked wheels and twin-shock rear suspension. Crafted with the meticulous attention to detail that has long defined the Bonneville name, the new T40 and T40 Black deliver authentic style and exceptional quality throughout. Heritage-inspired two-tone paint schemes, hand-painted coach lining and premium materials create a timeless and distinctive appearance, while beautifully finished details such as the brushed peashooter silencer and classically shaped aluminium engine covers reinforce their unmistakable Bonneville style. Powered by a dedicated version of Triumph's 400cc TR Series engine, the T40 features a unique engine tune developed exclusively for the Bonneville, delivering a relaxed, torque-rich power delivery. Combined with a distinctive exhaust note, the result is a riding experience that remains true to the character of the Bonneville. Setting a new benchmark for technology in the category, the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black combine classic Bonneville styling with an unprecedented level of rider-focused technology. A new 4-inch circular TFT display provides full smartphone connectivity, including navigation, phone and music control, while five riding modes, cruise control, lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control deliver a level of functionality and rider assistance normally associated with larger-capacity motorcycles. The Bonneville T40 and T40 Black have been developed to deliver an accessible and confidence-inspiring riding experience. Relaxed ergonomics, a low seat height, which can be reduced to just 770mm with an accessory low seat, and lightweight handling make the motorcycles approachable for a wide range of riders. Complemented by a modern chassis and lightweight aluminium rims, the result is easy manoeuvrability, agile dynamics and everyday riding confidence.
Steve Sargent, Chief Product Officer, Triumph Motorcycles, said: “The Bonneville is one of the most significant motorcycles in Triumph's history, so introducing a new model carrying that name comes with a responsibility to get it right. From the outset, our ambition for the T40 and T40 Black was not simply to create a smaller Bonneville, but to create a motorcycle that delivers the style, character and ownership experience riders expect from a genuine Bonneville. Bringing that experience to more riders is strategically important for Triumph, particularly as lower-capacity motorcycle categories continue to grow around the world." “Working closely with Bajaj, we challenged ourselves to retain the details and qualities that make a Bonneville special, from the proportions and finish to traditional touches such as hand-painted coach lining, while also introducing a level of technology and rider-focused innovation not previously seen in this category. The result is a motorcycle that stays true to the values that have defined the Bonneville for generations while opening the experience to even more riders.” Authentic and iconic design At the heart of the T40’s iconic silhouette is its teardrop fuel tank. Its flowing shape and balanced proportions give the motorcycle a confident, elegant presence from every angle. Heritage-inspired paint schemes, finished with hand-painted coach lining, emphasise the form of the tank and reinforce the attention to detail. Classic rubber knee pads and the iconic three-bar Triumph tank badge bring together design, tradition and craftsmanship. Central to the T40’s front profile is its classic round headlight. Creating an instantly recognisable front end associated with Bonnevilles past and present, the LED headlight incorporates a distinctive daytime running light signature, combining modern functionality and visibility with the timeless simplicity of the traditional Bonneville design. The clean, uncluttered profile of the 400cc TR
Series engine makes it a focal point of the T40’s silhouette. Bright machined
cooling fins on the cylinder head and large finned header roses provide a nod to
the Bonnevilles of the past. Classically shaped clutch and alternator covers are
finished in brushed aluminium, adding a premium appearance that complements the
motorcycle’s timeless styling. The suspension set-up further reinforces the T40’s distinctive Bonneville silhouette. Classically styled front forks give the motorcycle a refined and instantly familiar front profile, while the twin rear shocks preserve the open, uncluttered appearance that is a hallmark of Bonneville design. Together, the forks and twin shocks ensure the T40 remains true to its heritage and recognisable as a Bonneville from every angle.
Meticulous attention to detail The choice of component finishes distinguishes the two models. On the T40, chrome-finished mirrors and grab hoop are combined with brushed aluminium heel guards and a brushed steel exhaust system. On the T40 Black, components are painted or powder-coated black to complement its darker overall treatment. Modern engineering has been carefully concealed to preserve a clean appearance. Cables and hoses are routed out of sight, allowing the uncluttered profile of the single-cylinder TR Series engine to remain a prominent part of the motorcycle’s design. Triumph branding appears on key components rather than relying solely on prominent badges. It is embossed into the handlebar clamp and front mudguard and also appears on the engine covers and within the front and rear lights. These details become apparent on closer inspection and contribute to the overall quality of execution. The Bonneville T40 is available in three distinctive heritage-inspired colour schemes. Aegean Blue and Fusion White provide a fresh, clean interpretation of traditional Bonneville style, with the bright two-tone finish highlighting the flowing lines of the sculpted fuel tank. The Meriden Blue and Tangerine Orange scheme offers a bolder treatment, combining heritage tones with a vibrant accent that draws attention to the tank profile and hand-painted coach line. New England White and Jet Black completes the range with a more understated contrast, creating a refined and timeless appearance. The T40 Black introduces a darker, more purposeful interpretation of the same classic Bonneville design. Finished in Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black, it features gloss-black aluminium wheel rims contrasted by bright steel spokes. Powder-coated engine casings, together with a blacked-out header and peashooter silencer, give the T40 Black a subtle modern edge while retaining the traditional proportions and recognisable design cues of the Bonneville family.
Bonneville character from a dedicated 400cc
engine Courtesy of a revised cylinder head and dedicated Bonneville engine tune, the T40 delivers increased torque lower in the rev range, with peak torque of 36 Nm at 5,000 rpm providing strong drive and a distinctive feel. Peak power of 32 PS is delivered at 7,000 rpm, placing the emphasis on accessible performance at everyday engine speeds. Three pre-configured riding modes, Road, Rain and Eco, are joined by two customisable modes. Each mode adjusts the throttle response, traction control and ABS to suit different conditions and rider preferences. Riders can select their preferred modes and add them to a quick-access menu on the circular TFT display. Both models feature cruise control, reducing rider fatigue, as well as Lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control, which both provide additional support when cornering in varying conditions. The engine has also been developed to produce a distinctive exhaust note, with clear firing pulses from the single-cylinder engine. The peashooter silencer adds depth to the sound, while a lower idle speed further contributes to the T40’s relaxed Bonneville character. Both the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black are A2 licence-compliant as standard, bringing their torque-rich performance and dedicated Bonneville engine character to a wider range of riders.
Class leading tech with classic charm Key riding information, including gear position,
indicators, ambient temperature and fuel level, is displayed prominently, while
the centre of the screen provides access to connected phone functions and
motorcycle settings. Five customisable widgets can be configured and accessed
through the backlit left-hand switch cube, giving riders quick access to the
functions they use most frequently. The Triumph Navigation App also allows riders to plan routes before setting off, with functionality to discover routes, add waypoints and manage journey details. Routes can be saved, imported via GPX files and shared with other riders, with navigation information displayed directly on the motorcycle's TFT screen. Phone connectivity is provided as standard and
operated through the TFT display and left-hand switch cube. Riders can answer
calls, access contacts and control music playback without handling their phone
directly. For quicker access, media functions can also be assigned to the
customisable widgets. Braking is provided by a twin-piston front brake caliper and a one-piece-style front brake disc. Braided brake lines support consistent braking performance and a precise feel at the lever, while Optimised Cornering ABS takes lean angle into account when the brakes are applied. A USB-C charging socket is also fitted, allowing compatible devices to be charged while riding.
Relaxed and easy, yet agile and rewarding. With a seat height of 790mm and a ready-to-ride weight of 191kg, the Bonneville T40 has compact dimensions and an accessible riding position. An accessory low seat, available in black or brown, reduces seat height by a further 20mm to 770mm. Everyday practicality has also been considered, with a centre stand fitted as standard. As well as making it easier to store the motorcycle upright, it also simplifies routine cleaning and chain maintenance. Globally successful 400cc platform Joining the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X, Scrambler 400 XC, Tracker 400 and Thruxton 400, the T40 introduces one of the company's most enduring motorcycle names to the range. With six distinct motorcycles now available, the platform extends across multiple categories while continuing to deliver the quality, character and individuality that have become hallmarks of Triumph's 400cc line-up. A comprehensive range of Genuine Triumph Accessories will be available from launch, allowing owners to tailor the T40 to their individual requirements. The range includes low and comfort seats and classic panniers, enhancing comfort, practicality and everyday usability. Designed for everyday riding, the Bonneville T40
combines durable finishes with Triumph's renowned standards of quality and
attention to detail. Class-leading service intervals of 10,000 miles (16,000km)
help reduce ownership costs and minimise time off the road.
