“Who is this bike for?”

This question is the driving ethos behind many bike tests and sometimes it is very easy to answer. But with some bikes, like the 2015 Suzuki DR200S, it isn’t so simple. So, instead of the typical approach, we are going take use an online dating method and get to know YOU a little better.

Are you concerned about appearances?

We know that looks are an important factor when joining a rider and a bike. For 2015, Suzuki basically took its tried-and-true DR200SE and gave it a makeover and a whole new wardrobe. The shrouds, numberplates, seat, and fenders are now reminiscent of the RM-Z motocross line. That being said, tucked under this new look is an less-than-modern air-cooled, 199cc, SOHC engine fed by a Mikuni carb, wrapped in a burly steel frame, suspended by a non-adjustable, standard fork and sag-adjustable shock. There is a disk brake in the front and a drum out back. If your companion needs to be dripping with the latest accessories, the DR200S will disappoint. But, if you like a nicely dressed, simple and classic partner, this bike could be a match.

Are you driven by power?

The key to any relationship is connecting ability with desire, and if you crave massive amounts of power, your desire will outweigh the DR200S’ ability to perform. Yet, if you are a new rider, a mellow rider or just don’t care to go fast, this bike will keep you happy. The electric start works great and we didn’t have any hesitation from the battery. The engine, on the other hand, is very cold blooded and needs the choke to start for the first time no matter the ambient temperature. Once it is warmed up, the bike fires pretty consistently with a blip of the throttle.

We’d wager that a coffer stirrer could replace the exhaust system and no one would notice the difference. Yet, the plus side to the DR-S’s super corked up exhaust is that is extra stealthy; this keeps non-riders happy and riding areas open. The down side to the overall conservative tune to the motor is that it has zero excitement. There is very little grunt in the bottom end, the mid-range has the most power, and then it falls on its face on top. Even in the mid-range, though, there isn’t much power to speak of. While new and timid riders will find this traction-grabbing style of motor pleasing, anyone that is used to real dirt bikes will be wanting more in a hurry.

Some relationships are as volatile as magnesium and water, while others are as stable as stone. If you prefer the later, the DR200S is a great bet. The low seat height, not-so-light weight, plush suspension, and upright seating position make the Suzuki a stable machine on dirt and on the road. While it isn’t nimble by any means, the low center of gravity allows the bike to turn pretty easily. Also, most riders can flat-foot at a stop light, which also means that dabbing in tricky off-road situations is easy as well. The fork and shock are not high-performing units, but neither is the rest of the bike and the tuned-for-comfort suspension absorbs moderate bumps well and offers a balanced ride. As long as you keep the off-road riding at a mellow pace and avoid steep hills and deep sand, you and the DR200S should get along fine.

Are you willing to travel?

One great thing about this mild-mannered motor is that, by barely sipping gas, the 3.3-gallon tank can take you hundreds of miles before a refill. Also, the wide and low (by dirt bike standards) seat is inviting for the beginning rider and can keep two people happy for long hours on the road. And speaking of hours on the road, the engine should last forever, since it is so mildly tuned. More power means more wear and tear. Cleaning the air filter and changing the oil is about as technical as it gets for this bike.
