        Honda ST 1300 Pan European

Honda's ST 1100 Pan European was first launched in 1989, and continued largely unchanged until 2002, when this 126 lcc updated model was launched. The original Pan was a huge success in the heavy tourer market, its 1 100cc V-4 engine and accomplished chassis winning acclaim from riders worldwide. But by 2002, it was starting to look dated in comparison with competition from bikes like Yamaha's FJR1300 and BMW's Rl 150RT. So Honda embarked on a ground-up revamp of the Pan.
The new bike, dubbed the STX1300 Pan European, retains the same transverse V-4 layout of the older bike, but has an all-new chassis and engine. An aluminium frame saves weight and adds stiffness compared with the older steel frame, and the large-capacity engine is packed with modern technology to produce even more torque and power. Ceramic coated aluminium bores cut weight and friction inside the engine, while lasting longer than the old steel liners. New lightweight pistons further reduce friction, and the old bike's camshaft belt drive is replaced by a smaller, maintenance-free chain. This new cam drive, together with a repositioned alternator, makes the engine shorter and more compact.
New dual balancer shafts cut vibration from the already smooth motor, while a PGM-F1 fuel-injection system replaces the ST1100 carbs.
A new lightweight aluminium swingarm further refines the rear monoshock suspension while the front end is fitted with stiff 45mm (1.8in) forks. Honda's Dual-CBS linked brake system is fitted to the new model, and optional anti-lock brakes are also available. Redesigned bodywork updates the Pan's looks while remaining true to the original bike's styling. Honda offers a wide variety of optional accessories for the STX1300: owners can choose from a list that includes a large-capacity topbox, CD/radio sound system and heated grips.
New for 2003 · Powerful, new liquid-cooled 1261cc longitudinally mounted V-4 engine produces
125 bhp at 8000 rpm and 85 lb./ft. of torque at 6000 rpm for effortless
acceleration and passing power. Unique ST1300A Features · Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) provides for even better braking control in
emergency conditions over a wide range of road conditions. Engine/Drivetrain · Compact, powerful 1261cc DOHC 90-degree V-4 engine with an oversquare bore and
stroke of 78mm x 66mm. Longitudinal engine-mounting eliminates an inefficient
90-degree turn in the power flow for improved drivetrain efficiency. SUSPENSION · All-new aluminum frame is 1.1 kg. lighter than the steel frame it replaces and
features a massive steering head casting and triple-box-section spars. The V-4
engine serves as a tuned, stressed frame member. The solid engine-mounting
system utilizes specially designed hangers and carefully matched mounting bolts
to provide both excellent road feel and minimal engine vibration.
Additional Features · Full-coverage bodywork features an Aero-Ellipse form that incorporates
striking parabolic lines to accentuate the look of speed as well as enhance
stability at high speeds.
