The R850GS is the smaller-capacity companion to the R1100GS. While the Rl 100GS was superseded by the updated R1150GS in 1999, the R850GS remained in production as a cheaper, lower-capacity alternative. Cosmetically and mechanically, it is almost identical to the older Rl 100GS, the only external signs of its smaller capacity being the tank badges.

The quirky styling, with a large 'snout' mudguard integrated into the top fairing, is instantly recognizable, and the screen and large tank provide good weather-protection. The flat-twin engine shelters the rider's feet and legs. Since the R850GS has all the mass of the larger 1100 model, but with less power, it offers slower progress. An ABS version is also available.
